Shangri-La itineraries

Three-, five- and seven-day plans sequenced around altitude rather than around ticking boxes. The order matters: what you do on day one changes how the rest of the trip feels.

The one rule

Arrival day is not a sightseeing day

Shangri-La sits at 3,280 m. Most visitors feel something — headache, shortness of breath, poor sleep — on the first night. Every plan below starts gently and puts the strenuous items later. Read more in the altitude section.

⚠️ If you fly directly in from low altitude cities such as Kunming, Chengdu or beyond, treat arrival day as genuine rest. Coming overland from Lijiang is easier because you climb gradually.

Lijiang to Shangri-La: HuXiang Road private scenic tour

Turn the transfer day into the best day of the trip. A private vehicle runs the HuXiang Road between Lijiang and Shangri-La with stops at Tiger Leaping Gorge and the White Water Terrace, with admission to both included (CNY 45 and CNY 30). Ten hours, English or Chinese guide available, free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

Worth knowing: this is a transfer with sightseeing built in, so you pick which stops to make — you cannot see all of them in one day. Meals, other tickets and gratuities are not included, and the cheapest option is vehicle-only without a guide.
