Meili Snow Mountain & Yubeng

Kawakarpo, 6,740 m, the highest summit in Yunnan and one of the most sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism. It has never been climbed. This is the long detour that serious northern Yunnan trips are built around.

Watching sunrise at Feilaisi

The standard plan is to arrive in Deqin in the afternoon and sleep at or near Feilaisi. Before dawn you walk to the viewing terrace and wait. If the weather cooperates, the first light turns the row of peaks gold — the moment people travel this far for.

Manage expectations: the range spends a lot of the year behind cloud, especially in the summer monsoon. Build in at least two mornings if seeing the sunrise genuinely matters to you, and check cloud conditions rather than trusting one forecast.

The Yubeng trek

Yubeng is a small village tucked behind the range, reached on foot or by mule rather than by public road in the traditional route. The classic loop takes two to three days and takes in the Sacred Waterfall and Ice Lake, with basic guesthouses along the way. It is high, physical walking, and conditions vary season to season.

⚠️ Do not attempt Yubeng lightly: it is serious high-altitude walking, weather changes fast, and trail condition changes between seasons. Hire a local guide, arrange porters or mules where needed, carry proper rain gear, and make sure you are already acclimatised in Shangri-La before starting.

How to get here

  • Private driver or organised tour — the realistic choice for most visitors, with stops en route;
  • Long-distance coach — runs Shangri-La to Deqin, cheaper but slower and less flexible;
  • Self-drive — possible for experienced drivers; mountain roads, landslides in the wet season, long distances between services.

Shangri-La to Meili: Feilai Temple private day trip

A twelve-hour private return trip from Shangri-La to the Feilai Temple viewing terrace above Deqin, crossing Baima Snow Mountain and the old Tea Horse Road, with a Tibetan lunch near the temple. Private guide and vehicle included, free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

Be clear on what this is: a same-day return trip. You arrive long after dawn and leave well before the next one, so you will not see the golden sunrise on Kawakarpo — seeing that requires an overnight at Feilaisi. Entrance fees are not listed as included, so confirm at the time of booking.
