One of the deepest gorges on earth, where the Jinsha River — the upper Yangtze — is squeezed between the Yulong and Haba ranges. It sits right on the Lijiang to Shangri-La road, which makes it the easiest major stopover in northern Yunnan.

Private day trip with two hours inside Tiger Leaping Gorge plus lunch there, then 2.5 hours at the White Water Terrace. Gorge and terrace entrance tickets, transport, a Chinese lunch and Chinese/English hosting are all included.
Good to know: this covers the Upper Gorge only, not the two-day high trail. The gorge escalator down to the river (about 80 RMB round trip) is not included. Total driving time is around five and a half hours, and private tours need booking at least 15 days ahead.
Upper Tiger Leaping is what most visitors see: a developed viewpoint area with stairways descending towards the rapids, where the river is at its narrowest and loudest. It works for almost anyone, including families, and fits neatly into a transfer day.
Middle Tiger Leaping is rougher — steep metal ladders and informal paths down towards the water, run by local operators who maintain them. It is more dramatic and more physical.
Lower Tiger Leaping is quieter and less developed, worth considering only if you have already done the other two and want quiet.
The well-known walk runs along the Haba side of the gorge high above the river, usually over two days with a night in a small guesthouse partway along. Views across to the Yulong massif are the payoff, and the sense of scale inside the gorge is unlike anything else in Yunnan at this price.
