A Tibetan town of more than 1,300 years on the old Tea Horse Road, rebuilt after a fire in 2014 but still the living centre of Shangri-La. Free to enter, walkable from any hotel, and best visited in the evening.

Above the town in Guishan Park stands a monumental prayer wheel, roughly 21 metres tall and weighing tens of tonnes — among the largest in the world. It takes several people pushing together to get it turning, and doing so is considered a merit-making act. The park balcony beside it gives the cleanest elevated view over the rooftops and out towards the plateau.
Turn it clockwise, walk the row of smaller wheels the same way, and take your time: at this altitude the short uphill approach is genuinely breathless if you charge it.
