Through the seasons

Napahai is a depression that fills and empties. In the rainy months it behaves like a shallow lake, reflecting sky and hills with yaks and horses grazing at the edges. Later in the year the water recedes and it becomes open grassland where herders work. That rhythm is why two visitors in different months can describe it as completely different places — both are right.

Winter brings the birds. The black-necked crane is the prize sighting, treated with real care locally, and watching it means keeping your distance and using a long lens rather than walking out across the grass.

Getting around it

  • Cycling or e-bike — the most popular option, and an e-bike takes the sting out of the loop at this altitude;
  • Taxi or driver — ask to be dropped at one end and collected from the other, or to stop at viewpoints;
  • Horse riding — offered on the grassland; agree the price and duration clearly before mounting;
  • Combine it — Songzanlin is close by, so the standard plan is monastery in the morning, grassland in the afternoon.
⚠️ Agree prices in advance for horse rides, parking and any viewpoint charge, and expect informal operators rather than official ticketing. Keep off the wet ground itself — this is functioning pasture and wetland, and driving across it damages grazing and bird habitat.
